Wenaha West Quality Bull MF 2019
« on: June 13, 2019, 10:00:51 AM »
I drew one of the quality tags for Wenaha West this year with modern firearm. Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated. I have about 6 packers/spotters that can help for the entire season oct 21- nov 3. I don’t have access to horses, but have been reading up on the drop camp option.

Terrible tag to draw..  only little raghorns and not many of those...
No elk in the wenaha

In all seriousness, congrats, been trying for that tag for 13 years.  Not many elk, but the bulls you do find will likely be bruisers. Just be prepared. Be in the best shape of your life going in.  Don't rely on your 6 packers. They'll walk to the edge of the canyon and say screw that.  Just make sure before you pull the trigger that you can get him out of there before the meat spoils..  meats #1. Horns come in second.  Don't believe there are any drop camps available for the westside of the unit.  Think that's just for the Eastside.  Good luck!  Hope you shoot a dandy!

No need for a drop camp . The unit is not even 10 miles north to south.  I spike hunt there every year but heading to Idaho this year I could probably be parted from my honey holes Haha.

Just like elkchaser said no need for drop camp.  Drop in and walk out every day youll be fine.  You can set up a giant camp on the rim.  Great tag good luck.

Lots of trails and a good unit to keep your options open and move around unless you scout up a bull you want to target. Mtcook can help you out if you want a drop camp or meat hauled out on west side of unit.. congrats on the tag

My advice is go over and spend a couple weekends learning access points into the unit if you haven’t been there before. Make sure you also know your physical limits for packing once you have a bull down. Also depending on the year you could get in trouble with snow up there depending how your rig is set up so make sure and watch the weather.

I know the unit well. It's all about glassing and hoping for no fog. Good luck. Some awesome bulls.

Good first post.
If you have 6 packers/spotters for the entire season you should kill one of the biggest bulls in the unit and have virtually no need for a drop camp.
I’ll see you out there, probably be by myself.  :brew:

I was just in there for spring bear for the first time in my life. We saw several bulls that looked amazing for the first week of June. Numbers were lower than I had expected but thats only based on what I imagined it might be. I saw more deer than I had expected and less elk but the bulls were big. Several cows looked pretty skinny. Steep and difficult country, had a wolf come into our camp. Shot the only bear I saw.

My .02. Glad you have help because getting an elk out of there by yourself will be hard work
what in the wild wild world of sports???
